Recording and editing radio trailer

Recording
To start of recording our radio show we had to go and arrange a date with the teacher of when he was available to do it.

On the day we were meeting we went down to the recording studio early so that we could set everything up such as where to put the script so that he could read it without having to hold it and turn all the equipment on ready. After this was done we waited for him to come.

When he came into the room the first thing we had to do was to set the microphone up so it fitted his height so that when he spoke it would go straight into the microphone, so he wasn't slouching and to make what he said clear and understanding.

We explained to him what he was to do so that he wasn't clueless and before we started recording we let him go through the script a few times so that he could get a understanding of what he was about to say. It made it easier because he could get the enthusiasm ready.

We were now ready to record. He would read the first paragraph and then stop and everything would be quiet for 30 seconds before he would read the next paragraph. We carried on repeating this routine until the end. The reason for this was so that when we were editing it would be easier to cut out. Throughout there was one mistake which was that he got abit muxed up which was easy to change because we just waited a few seconds and he started the paragraph again.

Once it was all done we listened to it to make sure that everything was okay. Once we were sure it was fine we thanked our teacher for doing it.

Editing
We uploaded all the information to our computer and opened it on Adobe. The first step was to edit out the gaps and parts that werent needed and get rid of them. This made it easier to seperate each part that was needed. We then had to go back to the documentary and pick out all the voice clips that were going to be needed in our radio trailer. This meant the grandparent interview and so on. Once we had cropped them out we placed them on our radio timeline and placed them in the different gaps, where they were meant to be. We then closed all the gaps and uploaded the music. After doing this we added it to our radio trailer. It was the song "I want it all" by Queen. We cropped some of the song that was too long for our radio clips. We listened to it and made sure everything was alright. The next stage was just saving it.

Scripting radio trailer

This is the script that we created for our radio trailer.
Our voiceover Mr Bottom read this out.

(I want it all-Queen)

Is society today fuelled by greed? Money, drugs, food, sex, alcohol, a good education? Are we really the greediest generation?

“I think in those years they were happy with what they had”-Grandparent

Has society changed since the recession?

“I think people are greedier, they are looking to make more money quickly and don’t seem to care about anyone else”-Ex banker

Is there really a need for greed? Has rampant individualism replaced our care for fellow human beings in this society?

“If I won the lottery Id like buy a massive house for me and a car and id buy some stuff for my family and friends”-Teenager

What does greed mean to you? Find out what it means to others. "I Want It All", Channel 4, half 7, Sunday 19th December.

The radio show will be on channels such as Juice FM and Magic because this is a popular channel for our target audience. It will also be broadcasted in the morning and around 5 because these are the more ideal times that people listen to the radio so are more likely to hear about it.

Scripting voiceover and the recording

This is the script to the documentary so the person doing the voiceover knew what they were doing. After every paragraph of the script we waited around 20 seconds before the next paragraph was read. This helped to make sure there was no complication so it wouldnt get mixed up. We had to watch the documentary first before so that we could see how long of a gap there was so we could make sure the text fitted.

This is the script:

Introduction-21 seconds
Are we becoming an increasingly greedy society? Is the desire for a large pay packet, an ideal education and the latest gadgets simply a feature of human nature? Or is our society greedier than previous generations? Have we lost sight of the line between greed and obsession? We asked people what comes to mind when they think of greed.

Voxpops to Banker-5 seconds
Our survey showed that two thirds of people claim that money makes them happy, but is there a link between greed and money?

Banker to Dad-7 seconds
Many people agree that greed is one of the main causes of the recession, but with bills mounting up, how is the average family coping?

Dad to Gran-6 seconds
So are the youth of today a greedier generation or have our gluttonous habits been passed down from our ancestors?

Paris Hilton-12 seconds
Paris Hilton, the girl who has everything from clothes to cars, perfume to pooch, plays a major role in the lives of many teenage girls. And she is not alone. Programmes such as MTV Cribs portrays thousands of celebrities glamourising greed. But is this a lifestyle we should be promoting?

Michael Carroll-20 seconds
Many people dream of having lots of money so that they can have a better life, but does the reality match the dream? According to the 9 million pound lottery winner Michael Carroll, the answer is yes. Spending his winnings on cars, a house, drink, drugs and women, he says he is happy despite now being penniless again. We asked people what they’d buy if they won the lottery.

Editing

We had to edit everything. Altogether the documentary being edited was quite difficult but was repeating the same techniques over and over again. We used effects, had to edit some out and edit new things in. It was all worth it as it made it better and look more professional.

Cutaways
Once we recorded the footage for our cutaways we had to see what parts of it looked okay and what parts looked reasonable for our documentary. We took bits out of some, kept the entire cutaway and simply just got rid of some. Once we recorded the footage for our cutaways we had to see what parts of it looked okay and what parts looked reasonable for our documentary. We took bits out of some, kept the entire cutaway and simply just got rid of some. We needed to make some bigger so we enlarged it then had to compress it so that it was okay in our documentary and not fuzzy. We also needed to make it louder because when we first got it the volume was quite quiet. When we placed it into Adobe we either kept the sound it came with or removed the sound and added music or different sound.

Interviews
We had to edit out all the questions of the interview and just keep the answers. Once we had done this we had to see what questions we would keep because there were too many questions for the amount of time that we had on that section. We kept all the good and useful answers that went with our documentary and removed all the ones that were good but less useful. We left gaps between some of the question to leave room for any cutaways that would be placed into the documentary. We also had to make some of the voices on some of them louder or quieter so they were a perfect sound. Then we placed music over the voice to give it more entertainment. Using the volume we lowered the music down so it was like background music and so the interviewees could be heard clear and loudly.

Archive footage
Archive footage was quite easy because it just came of the internet. Once that we uploaded it to Adobe we just had to look through it all and see what parts were actually useful and interesting. We edited all these parts out and put them to one side. We kept them on the side until we could put them in the place where they were going. If we didn’t want the sound and the image together we simply unlinked the two and removed the sound or video that wasn’t needed. If we didn’t want the video the sound was more likely to have gone over a image or another video cutaway and if we didn’t want the sound the video was more likely to be the cutaway and have either another voice clip added or music.

Voxpops
Voxpops were quite time consuming to edit because we had to constantly check through them and some were too windy so couldn’t be edited so simply were deleted. When we looked through them we needed to delete the questions and just keep the answers. We kept the footage to one side and some of the Voxpops were either too loud or too quiet so we had to change the volume. Also on one of the Voxpops it was really dark so we had to edit and put a lighting effect on it so that the person could be seen properly. Then we added it to the timeline and put them altogether. We put transitions between each one so that it flowed professionally. We made sure we didn’t choose a transition that was weird and didn’t look professional.

Title sequence
For the title sequence every time we had filmed the footage we had too upload it to Adobe and once we did this we looked through it too see if there were any bits that needed taking out such as a hand that was in the camera which wasn’t meant to be there. If it couldn’t be edited out or the background was seen very badly we simply had to start the filming again. When it was all okay and everything was alright we fast motioned the footage so that it would go faster and look more effective. We tried all different ones such as the very fastest and then slowly started going down in speed. Once we found the perfect speed it was finally done.

Edit decision list

The edit decision list is all the clips from the logging sheet that we will actually be using in the documentary.

This is the edit decision list:

Logging

The logging sheet is all the footage that we captured. It showed the counter number which is where the clip is on the tape, the name of the clip, the length of the shot and whether it was a good or bad take. It helped us to see what we could use and what not to use.

This is the logging sheet:

Filming

Cutaways
Us filming the cutaways.
-This was one of the cutaways that we filmed. One was grabbing money which is actual footage in our documentary. It is on a surface and gets grabbed from different hands at different angles. We did this a few times to make sure we got it right.

This is us filming the monopoly board which we dont think will be suitable for our documentary. It started off with us playing a game of monopoly and then we just started moving the monopoly pieces around the board. We also did filming of just passing monopoly money to each other to look as if they are giving them real money. This is us filming the orange cutaway. We got Josie to stand in a postition and just peel an orange. This was filmed for the grandparent interview as she explains that all she got really as a child was an orange.

Most of the cutaways were either images or archive footage that we have found on the internet. This means that we didnt have many to film.
For the father interview we used the cutaway of his child playing games but didnt film the front of his face.

This is the permission letter.

Title sequence

We recorded the title sequence a number of times and with different techniques. This is on my planning page though.

Planning

Storyboard title sequence
We had to do a planning of the title sequence so that we could show how to do it. As we had an idea of a different title sequence at the beginning we had too change the first one and do it again. The first one was coins being made out too spell "I want it all". We did it at first by placing a coin down and pressing record then stopping to put another coin down. We then put it in fast mode so it went quickly we had to do this quite a few times because of faults such as you could see the background was seen or there was faults with the making of it. So we did it again where we kept the recording going and edited the hand out so we could just fast forward it. This also went wrong because when we finished editing, the hand was shown in it and the background was seeable. It was also taking up alot of time so we decided to come up with another idea.

This is the coin title sequence being created.

First time:

This is the first coin title sequence:

Second time:

Storyboard the second title sequence
As the coin idea wasnt working we came up with other ideas. The idea that we then came up with was to have fast motion of all the greeds being used and shown to resemble greed. This is the new storyboard:

We did this by picking up the individual items one by one and pretending to use them and then put it back to the table to show how it wasnt really needed to show greed. Once we had got the footage we had to fast motion it. This made it look better. This method was also quite time consuming as we had to repeat it a few times and some things went wrong such as it was too slow or something was in the camera. We also bought numerous chocolate bars as it couldnt be used again after it had been broken as it wouldnt look right. These are the pictures whilst we were recording it.

Here is a video of us also doing it.

Interviews

Interview with the father.

Interview with the Head of Buisness.
